Numerical and artificial neural network analyses of ground surface settlement of tunnel in saturated soil

Abstract: The main purpose of this research is to predict the ground surface settlement in tunneling of a single circular tunnel with simultaneous changes in the mechanical properties of soil and geometrical properties of the tunnel section. In this research, numerical and parametric analysis of circular tunneling in frictional-cohesive saturated soil has been investigated using 2D finite element method by ABAQUS. In other words, the behavior of ground surface, considering to change the different values of depth-to-diam… Show more

“…Among the very recent investigations are the work by Chen et al [18], Khalili et al [19], and Moghaddasi & Noorian-Bidgoli [20], who attempted to integrate the shield's operational parameters, the tunnel's geometry, and the geological conditions in the NNW models to improve the prediction results. Gradually some efforts [2,3,8] have been made to improve the accuracy of the prediction models by developing a hybrid approach of numerical modeling and NNWs.…”

“…Many tunnel excavation projects are taking place concurrently around the world. Tunnel construction is becoming more common in urban areas, which poses a risk of damage to existing structures due to tunnel-induced ground deformation [1][2][3]. Recent advances in tunneling technology have allowed it to take advantage of the underground space to a greater extent.…”

“…In addition, there are many methods predicting the ground surface settlement, such as artificial neural network method [10], artificial bee colony algorithm [11], Peck method [12] and stochastic medium theory [13]. Artificial neural network method and artificial bee colony algorithm are more inclined to evaluate the risk of ground surface collapse, while Peck method is put forward based on the concept of soil loss.…”

“…But it did not introduce the principle of selecting input variables in the model. Ghiasi established a numerical simulation calculation model and a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) prediction model [6]. It predicted the surface settlement during a single circular tunnel excavation process, and believed that the prediction result was reasonable.…”
