Number words as number names

Abstract: Whether numbers are objects is the subject matter of a longstanding debate in philosophy. While numbers are generally treated as abstract objects in mathematics, philosophers have also appealed to natural language in order to support the view of numbers as objects. Support from natural language for such a view means that numbers would have the status of objects in the ontology implicit in natural language, the ontology of natural language.

“…A number of accounts in the philosophical literature hold that the a swathe of arithmetical sentences in natural language such as 'two and two is four' are best interpreted along adjectival lines, i.e. as something like 'two things and two other things are (together) four things' (Barlew, 2017;Felka, 2014;Hofweber, 2005;Jackson, 2013;Moltmann, 2013Moltmann, , 2017Roberts and Shapiro, 2017). While controversial, and certainly not true for all arithmetical sentences (e.g.…”

“…Numerals used as quantifiers, whether an appositive is present or null, are not, in my view, referential; the only referential use of numerals is as names (e.g., "Point to the two on the number chart" and "Two and two is four"). For recent discussion of the complexity of numerals, seeWeiner 2007 andMoltmann 2017.…”
