This qualitative descriptive study aimed to analyze the morphosemantic features of the derivational affix {ber-} embedded in Indonesian's denumeral verbs (VDnum). The data in this study is in the form of a VDnum construction with affix of {ber-}. The research data source is the corpus Leipzig Corpora Collection-Indonesian (LCCI). The data collection technique is the corpus combined with the observation technique. The data were analyzed in stages based on the Bagi Unsur Langsung (BUL) technique according to the basic theory of Derivational Morphology and Transpositional Semantics. Based on the analysis, two findings were as follows. Firstly, the affix {ber-} is a key in trans-positioning numerals into verbs. Without the affix, the VDnum in bI cannot be realized. In addition, the affix {ber-} in the VDnum tends to: (a) derive definitive cardinal numerals, (b) create the VDnum semantic type 'state ', and (c) embed the semantic role 'patient' in arguments distributed in one construction. This research concludes that morphosemantically the affix {ber-} in the construction of VDnum bI is essential in transposing numerals into verbs.

In recent years philosophers have used results from cognitive science to formulate epistemologies of arithmetic (e.g. Giaquinto in J Philos 98(1):5–18, 2001). Such epistemologies have, however, been criticised, e.g. by Azzouni (Talking about nothing: numbers, hallucinations and fictions, Oxford University Press, 2010), for interpreting the capacities found by cognitive science in an overly numerical way. I offer an alternative framework for the way these psychological processes can be combined, forming the basis for an epistemology for arithmetic. The resulting framework avoids assigning numerical content to the Approximate Number System and Object Tracking System, two systems that have so far been the basis of epistemologies of arithmetic informed by cognitive science. The resulting account is, however, only a framework for an epistemology: in the final part of the paper I argue that it is compatible with both platonist and nominalist views of numbers by fitting it into an epistemology for ante rem structuralism and one for fictionalism. Unsurprisingly, cognitive science does not settle the debate between these positions in the philosophy of mathematics, but I it can be used to refine existing epistemologies and restrict our focus to the capacities that cognitive science has found to underly our mathematical knowledge.

Michael O’Connor (whose 1980 opus, Hebrew Verse Structure, provides a compelling linguistically grounded description of the poetic line) has called the endurance of Lowthian parallelism a “horror” that wreaks havoc on lexical semantics and “is beyond the comprehension of any sensitive student of language.” Why does a model known to be a descriptive failure for a century persist in teaching resources and commentaries? It is because nothing compelling has risen to replace it. O’Connor’s linguistic analysis of the line offered the first piece to replacing the traditional model, but O’Connor’s model was more compelling for the structure of the poetic line than for the relationship of lines. In this study I take up interlineal syntax and offer an analysis that compliments and completes O’Connor’s approach, allowing us to provide a proper burial for the admirable but ultimately unworkable Lowthian parallelism.
