“…It has been argued that bilateral positive biopsies, increasing numbers of positive cores, the presence of perineural invasion and extended individual core cancer lengths or areas suggest a larger tumour volume with a greater likelihood of adverse pathological findings (25)(26)(27)(28)(29). This study's inclusion of a sizeable cohort of patients diagnosed using TP biopsy reflects the distinctive historical aspect of this patient population, but it is interesting that it demonstrates no significant difference in the description of the pattern of malignancy relating to biopsy technique.…”

“…The major exception to this is in the prostate gland, as numerous studies have shown that different measures of tumor size/extent on needle biopsy provide clinically important information. 1 In addition to the ability to predict a potentially insignificant disease that could be managed by active surveillance, 2 tumor extent on prostate needle biopsy has been found to correlate well with tumor volume on radical prostatectomy 3-7 and helps predict margin status, 8 extraprostatic extension, 9,10 and, in combination with other parameters, posttreatment tumor progression. [11][12][13][14][15] There are several studies of mammary carcinoma that have examined the relationship between radiologic tumor size and the subsequent size on final excision [16][17][18][19][20][21] as well as those that have evaluated the relationship between radiologic or pathologic tumor size (on excision) and the likelihood of lymph node metastasis.…”

“…[21] studied 108 patients who underwent prostatectomy for prostate cancer and found that the number of positive biopsies was the best predictor of margin status. This is not surprising, as it is known that serum PSA can be higher in simple hyperplasia of the prostate than in cases of malignancy.…”
