Number of people required for usability evaluation

Abstract: Introduction Usability evaluation is essential to make sure that software products newly released are easy to use, efficient, and effective to reach goals, and satisfactory to users. For example, when a software company wants to develop and sell a new product, the company needs to evaluate usability of the new product before launching it at a market to avoid the possibility that the new product may contain usability problems, which span from cosmetic problems to severe functional problems.… Show more

“…With regard to the total number of participants, we tried to enroll the maximum possible participants in each individual experiment. Despite recent studies such as Hwang and Salvendy [2010] claims that 10±2 evaluators are needed to perform a usability evaluation to find around 80% of usability problems, these studies are related to the usability evaluation of a Web application, but not the evaluation of the performance and perceptions of Web usability evaluation methods. However, we ensured that at least 12 participants were involved as a sample size for each experiment in order to detect a representative number of usability problems.…”

“…Initially it was believed that 4 to 5 users could identify up to 85% of the usability problems [52], but a more recent study [53] claims that between 8 and 12 evaluators are required to identify 80% of the problems. Therefore the heuristic evaluation is limited by having only four evaluators.…”
