Null-Reading Microbalance and its Use in the Study of the Infrared Spectra of Adsorbed Molecules

Abstract: A null-reading quartz spring microbalance is described which has been designed to measure the weight of gas adsorbed on thin pressed wafers suitable for infrared transmission studies. Its operation, calibration, and precision are discussed and special reference is made to the determination of integrated intensities of the infrared absorption bands of surface species.

“…Eqn. (8) enables us to calculate the ratio of the effective charges of the OH oscillator perturbed by the electrostatic field either in absence or in presence of adsorbed molecules. Let Ap2 and A,1 be the absorbances of the high-frequency OH band in presence or in absence of adsorbed molecules, respectively ; from (8) Accordingly, eqn.…”
