“…[41] The same year, a group of surgeons in Argentina adopted this new technique and shared their initial experiences. [42,43] Then the surgery group led by Schlitt formally presented “ALPPS” in a case series of 25 patients published in the Ann Surg . [19] Santibanes and Clavien [40] cited the need to create a self-explanatory and readily acceptable name for this procedure, so they proposed the acronym “ALPPS.” Since then, ALPPS has represented both a major contribution to the field of liver surgery and an instant source of controversy.…”

“…Hence, a few reports have suggested that simultaneous occlusion of the intrahepatic collateral circulation and portal vein allows a rapid FLR growth of 40% to 160% in only 6 to 9 days. 4 12 13 14 15 We were also able to complete this hepatectomy with a much shorter interval of 9 days between the first and second stage operations.…”

“…Stage 2 includes performing extended resection and ligating the disease-side hepatic artery, right bile duct, and hepatic vein. Unlike conventional PVE or PVL procedures, ALPPS occludes the blood supply (usually the portal vein) to the tumor part of the liver, blocks the collateral flow, and induces rapid growth of sFLR (40%-160%) in only 1 or 2 wk, while it takes more than 4 wk in PVE/PVL[ 66 , 67 ]. Therefore, ALPPS is often regarded as not only a remedy for PVE or PVL to accelerate FLR regeneration but also a strategy to prevent tumor progression.…”
