“…Among the Iberian-Balearic endemic species, Carduncellus dianius Webb [= Carthamus dianius (Webb) Coincy] remains unexplored in regard to its evolutionary history and its population genetic diversity and structure. Carduncellus dianius is a diploid (2n = 24; Vilatersana et al, 2000b) perennial plant with a narrow distribution range, restricted to less than 20 populations, which occurs in two main areas (Soler, Cristóbal & Crespo, 1999): the Dianic Mountains located in Alicante Province (eastern Iberian Peninsula; hereafter "Alicante"), and the northwestern part of the island of Ibiza (western Balearic Islands) along with the S'Espartar Islet, which is an islet off the western coast of Ibiza (both hereafter referred to as "Ibiza"). It inhabits low altitudes (0-500 m), mainly associated with coastal limestone rock crevices and, secondarily, to steep scrubland slopes.…”
