La “Comarca Lagunera” incluye las ciudades de Gómez Palacio, Cd. Lerdo y Torreón, Coah., y está localizada en la porción norte de la República mexicana. La construcción de las presas “Lázaro Cárdenas” y “Fco. Zarco” tiene como resultado un daño irremediable al ecosistema, al aumentar la evaporación y disminuir recarga en los mantos acuíferos. Existen problemas de salinización en el suelo, debido a la sobreexplotación de éstos, ya que se ha detectado arsénico en ellos, el cual se ha relacionado con la industria agropecuaria por el manejo inadecuado de pesticidas y fertilizantes. Esto se desencadena a partir del cambio en el sistema de riego “enlagunamiento” y a las prácticas culturales de los principales cultivos. Los productos del algodón permitieron el surgimiento de la industria textilera, aceitera, jabonera y de subproductos importantes para la alimentación del ganado. Sin embargo, con la caída del cultivo del algodón se sustituyó por el de forrajes para satisfacer la demanda de alimento del ganado, siendo una causa que agrava el deterioro del ambiente, particularmente del recurso hídrico, por la sobreexplotación de los acuíferos, teniendo como consecuencia una mayor desertificación. Se recomienda dar solución a la problemática ambiental con la participación de los ejidos comprometidos con la protección del ecosistema
