Nucleation and growth of Al2O3/metal composites by oxidation of aluminum alloys

Abstract: The nucleation and growth mechanisms during high temperature oxidation of liquid Al−3% Mg and Al−3% Mg−3% Si alloys were studied with the aim of enhancing our understanding of a new composite fabrication process. The typical oxidation sequence consists of an initial event of rapid but brief oxidation, followed by an incubation period of limited oxide growth after which bulk Al2O3/Al composite forms. A duplex oxide layer, MgO (upper) and MgAl2O4 (lower), forms on the alloy surface during initial oxidation and i… Show more

“…As indicated in Fig. 1 (d), compared with pure magnesium which exhibits a linear law due to the loose and porous structure of MgO [20], Mg-Y alloys shows a parabolic law. The change of the oxidation behaviors means that a relatively dense and protective oxide film has formed after isothermal oxidation by addition of yttrium.…”

“…Thus, a mixed structure of MgO and Nd 2 O 3 is expected to produce in the oxide layer, which is in agreement with the above experimental results. Then, the formed Nd 2 O 3 / MgO oxide layer can retard the outward Mg 2+ diffusion, which has been generally accepted to control the growth of the oxide film [37,38]. Consequently, the further oxidation rate of MgNd alloys is decreased as shown in Fig.…”
