Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy and Its Key Role in Environmental Research

Abstract: Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is arguably the most powerful and versatile tool in modern science. It has the capability to solve complex structures and interactions in situ even in complex heterogeneous multiphase samples such as soil, plants, and tissues. NMR has vast potential in environmental research and can provide insight into a diverse range of environmental processes at the molecular level be it identifying the binding site in human blood for a specific contaminant or the compositional dynamics of s… Show more

“…A solvent is added to the analyte, and, after swelling, the components become NMR observable. HR-MAS NMR allows the analysis of materials that swell, become partially soluble, or form true solutions to be analysed at resolution close to that observed in solution-state NMR 1, 3133 . An HSQC spectrum is an experiment that detects H–C bonds within a structure 34 .…”

“…This method is often used to characterize humic substances (35,40). Solid-state 13 C-NMR spectra are readily available for most humic substances provided by the International Humic Substances Society (IHSS) (www.humicsubstances.org).…”

“…For a complete review of NMR techniques and applications to understand interactions in environmental samples, readers should refer to an excellent review by Mazzei and Piccolo [28]. In environmental research, NMR is becoming an important tool used to highlight specific interactions between different constituents in soils [21,[29][30][31][32]. Over the years, numerous detailed NMR studies have provided valuable information on the underlying factors regarding the different binding properties of a number of anthropogenic contaminants [31][32][33][34][35].…”
