Nuclear excitation and prompt fission in muonic238U

Abstract: A study of muonic 238U has been performed in a combined (p-, 7f) and (#-, 7t') coincidence experiment to investigate the role of non-radiative transitions and their fission probabilities. An augmentation of the outer fission barrier of AEb = (0.6___ 0.1) MeV due to the presence of the muon is deduced. A significant contribution to the prompt fission yield not only results from the (2p~ Is) and (3d-+ l s) non-radiative transitions, but also from other radiationless transitions. Specifically, the measured fissio… Show more

“…4. The reduction of the fission probability APf due to the presence of the muon can be calculated with a formula given by Kupriyanov et al [23], taking into account an augmentation of the inner and outer barrier of 0.1 and 0.6 MeV, respectively, [19,22]: Gavron et al [21]. Open squares are from Berman et al [24], and open triangles are from this work Fig.…”

“…Recently, the results of a 23SU(p-, 7f) experiment devoted to the study of prompt fission have been published [8]. The experimental set-up consisted of two Germanium diodes with BGO-Compton suppression for the X-ray detection and a multi parallel plate avalanche counter filled with metallic ~3SU foils, which served as an active target.…”

“…The prompt fission yield originates predominantly from the n.r. 3d~ls transtion [11,8]. Therefore, it is difficult to interpret the magnitude , because the intensity of the transition 3d--,2p is strongly suppressed in the spectrum coincident with prompt fission.…”
