A Laser Ion Source and Trap (LIST) for a thick-target, isotope-separation on-line facility has been implemented at CERN ISOLDE for the production of pure, laser-ionized, radioactive ion beams. It offers two modes of operation, either as an ion guide, which performs similarly to the standard ISOLDE resonance ionization laser ion source (RILIS), or as a more selective ion source, where surface-ionized ions from the hot ion-source cavity are repelled by an electrode, while laser ionization is done within a radiofrequency quadrupole ion guide. The first physics application of the LIST enables the suppression of francium contamination in ion beams of neutron-rich polonium isotopes at ISOLDE by more than 1000 with a reduction in laser-ionization efficiency of only 20. Resonance ionization spectroscopy is performed directly inside the LIST device, allowing the study of the hyperfine structure and isotope shift of 217 Po for the first time. Nuclear decay spectroscopy of 219 Po is performed for the first time, revealing its half-life, α-to-β-decay branching ratio, and α-particle energy. This experiment demonstrates the applicability of the LIST at radioactive ion-beam facilities for the production and study of pure beams of exotic isotopes.

The quantum phase transitional behavior of the spherical shell model mean-field plus the geometric quadrupole-quadrupole and standard pairing model within a single-j shell is analyzed in detail. Various quantities, such as low-lying energy levels, some typical energy ratios, the overlaps of the excited states with those of the corresponding limiting cases, B(E2) values and electric quadrupole moments of some low-lying states and their ratios, as functions of the control parameter of the model in a j = 15/2 shell are calculated as an example, in which only a crossover occurs due to the Pauli exclusion. The results show that there are noticeable changes within the crossover region of the rotation-like to the pair-excitation (superconducting) phase transition, especially in the half-filling case. As application to realistic nuclear systems, a chain of isotones 212 Rn-213 Fr-214 Ra-215 Ac is chosen to be described by the model with valence protons in the 1h 9/2 shell. As far as the lowlying energy levels, the experimentally observed B(E2) values, and the electric quadrupole moment within the yrast band are concerned, these nuclei seem fitted reasonably well. The results indicate that these nuclei are all within the rotation-like to the pair-excitation phase transition near to the crossover point.

Electrostatic spectrometers utilized in high-resolution βspectroscopy studies such as in the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment have to operate with a background level of less than 10 −2 counts per second. This limit can be exceeded by even a small number of 219,220 Rn atoms being emanated into the volume and undergoing α-decay there. In this paper we present a detailed model of the underlying background-generating processes via electron emission by internal conversion, shake-off and relaxation processes in the atomic shells of the 215,216 Po daughters. The model yields electron energy spectra up to 400 keV and electron multiplicities of up to 20 which are compared to experimental data.
