Nuclear data for fusion technology – the European approach

Abstract: Abstract. The European approach for the development of nuclear data for fusion technology applications is presented. Related R&D activities are conducted by the Consortium on Nuclear Data Development and Analysis for Fusion to satisfy the nuclear data needs of the major projects including ITER, the Early Neutron Source (ENS) and DEMO. Recent achievements are presented in the area of nuclear data evaluations, benchmarking and validation, nuclear model improvements, and uncertainty assessments.

“…In order to improve the calculation of the d-Li neutron source term of IFMIF, an analysis of the elastic-scattering angular distributions of deuterons on 6,7 Li, for energies from 3 up to 50 MeV, using a phenomenological optical model potential (OMP) [29] was involved within an updated d+ 6,7 Li data evaluation [30,31]. The OMP analysis was completed by the coupled reaction channels (CRC) method within the code FRESCO [32] for consideration of the elastic transfer additional mechanism [33].…”

“…Also in connection with the IFMIF project, Ye et al analyzed in Ref. [34] the deuteron elastic scattering from 6,7 Li in the energy range from 10 to 50 MeV by the continuum discretized coupled channels (CDCC) method ( [35] and Refs. therein).…”

“…The development of nuclear data for fusion technology in Europe has been previously organized by Fusion for Energy (F4E), Barcelona, through a framework partnership agreement with the Consortium on Nuclear Data De-velopment and Analysis [2]]. The related activities addressed the nuclear data needs of the key facilities ITER, IFMIF and DEMO and included the evaluation and validation of relevant nuclear cross-section data, the development/extension of codes and software tools required for nuclear model calculations and sensitivity/uncertainty assessments.…”

“…Nevertheless, the knowledge of the α-particle OMP has greatly impacted nuclear astrophysics and fusion technology (e.g., [10,11]). Thus, it motivated the analysis of the new data in addition to the earlier ones involved to obtain the OMP parameter set [4].…”
