An improved metamaterial antenna, with a compact size of 27.8 × 31.9 × 0.794 mm 3 , fed by an offsetmicrostrip line, is proposed. The total size is slightly reduced and the measured impedance bandwidth is 4.08 − 7.83GHz for a return loss of | S11 |< −10 dB. Compared with the original patch antenna, the bandwidth of the proposed antenna is 550 MHz broader and has a lower resonant frequency. The simulated gain of the antenna is more than 2 dB, with a peak of about 6 dB at 6.8 GHz. Moreover, the antenna has strong radiation in the horizontal direction for some specific applications within the entire band.

Antennas are a key element in the wireless communication world of today, however, the significant disadvantage of microstrip antennas is its low bandwidth. In this work a microstrip planar antenna with enhanced bandwidth has been discussed. This antenna can be treated as an Ultra Wide Band (UWB) microstrip antenna due to the obtained frequency range of 12.9 GHz. The enhancement derives mainly from the structure with repetitive periodic pattern applied to the antenna. The unit cell composing the periodic pattern of the antenna was simulated to verify their dispersion characteristics. The dispersion diagram showed that the phase velocity and the group velocity are in opposite direction, which means that a medium loaded with an array made of repetition of the unit cells, supports left-handed waves (backward waves). From these findings, we conclude that the antenna has metamaterial property. Index Terms-Microstripantenna, ultrawide band, metamaterial, dispersion diagram.

Abstract:The paper presents microstrip patch antennas, which are based on the fractal antenna concept, and use planar periodic geometries, providing improved characteristics. The properties of the fractal structure were used in a single-fractal layer design as well as in a design, which employs fractals on both the upper and bottom layers of the antenna. The final structure, i.e., a double-fractal layer antenna has been optimized to enhance bandwidth and gain of the microstrip antenna. The proposed geometry significantly improved antenna performance. The antenna could support an ultra-wide bandwidth ranging from 4.1 to 19.4 GHz, demonstrating higher gain with an average value of 6 dBi over the frequency range, and a radiation capability directed in the horizontal plane of the antenna.
