Novel Triptycene-Based Cylindrical Macrotricyclic Host:  Synthesis and Complexation with Paraquat Derivatives

Abstract: [reaction: see text] A novel triptycene-based cylindrical macrotricyclic polyether containing two dibenzo[24]crown-8 cavities has been synthesized and proved to be a highly efficient host for the complexation with paraquat derivatives. Consequently, a new kind of very stable pseudorotaxane-type complex was formed in solution and in the solid state.

“…[120][121][122] It was found that triptycene (66) forms with viologens (67a,b) the 1:1 clip-shaped complexes in acetonitrile solution and in solid state. It was observed that 61a binds the guest stronger than 61b does.…”

“…3 Since then, many applications of triptycene-containing molecules have been reported. 4 Diphosphine ligands, 5 a molecular compass and gyroscope, 6 and supermolecular system in host-guest chemistry 7,8 are representative examples. Swager comprehensively studied triptycene-based polymers, which offer a new avenue for material chemistry.…”
