It is known that the low lifetime of photogenerated carriers is the main drawback of elemental photocatalysts. Therefore, a facile and versatile one‐step strategy to simultaneously achieve the oxygen covalent functionalization of amorphous red phosphorus (RP) and in situ modification of CdCO3 is reported. This strategy endows RP with enhanced charge carrier separation ability and photocatalytic activity by coupling band‐gap engineering and heterojunction construction. The as‐prepared nCdCO3/SO‐RP (n=0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0) composites exhibited excellent photocatalytic H2 evolution activity (up to 516.3 μmol g−1 h) from visible‐light‐driven water splitting (λ>400 nm), which is about 17.6 times higher than that of pristine RP. By experimental and theoretical investigations, the roles of surface oxygen covalent functionalization, that is, prolonging the lifetime of photogenerated carriers and inducing the negative shift of the conduction band potential, were studied in detail. Moreover, the charge transfer mechanism of these composites has also been proposed. In addition, these composites are stable and can be reused at least for three times without significant activity loss. This work may provide a good example of how to promote the activity of elemental photocatalysts by decorating their atomic structure.

Metal sulfide photocatalysts are typically required during water splitting to produce hydrogen. However, the rapid recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs in these highly unstable photocatalysts has restricted hydrogen production to small‐scale batch reactions. In this work, porous transition‐metal thiophosphites were used to enable continuous long‐term hydrogen production through photocatalysis. A wide bandgap (2.04 eV) was essential for generating hydrogen at a rate of 305.6 μmol h−1 g−1, 180 % faster than nonporous FePS3 nanosheets. More importantly, the high in‐plane stiffness of these approximately 7 nm thick porous FePS3 nanosheets ensured structural stability during 56 h of continuous photocatalysis reactions. The reaction results with D2O instead of H2O indicated that hydrogen mainly came from H2O. Furthermore, a sacrificial reagent (triethylamine) was photodegraded into diethylamine and acetaldehyde through a monoelectronic oxidation process, as indicated by HPLC and LC–MS. This synthesis strategy reported for FePS3 porous nanosheets paves a new pathway for designing other dianion‐based inorganic nanocrystals for hydrogen energy applications.

New ternary composites based on three dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) SrTiO3 (CdS/Au/3DOM-SrTiO3) were prepared and used as photocatalysts in visible light (λ > 420 nm) photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen evolution.Through optimizing the pore size of 3DOM-SrTiO3 materials and the loading amounts of Au and CdS, CdS/Au/3DOM-SrTiO3(300), templated by 300 nm sized poly(methyl methacrylate) colloids, was found to exhibit a remarkably enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate (2.74 mmol/h•g), which was 3.2 times as high as that of CdS/Au/C-SrTiO3 catalyst based on commercial SrTiO3. This notably enhanced photocatalytic performance was mainly attributed to the slow photon enhancement effect of 3DOM-SrTiO3(300) material, which significantly promoted the light harvesting efficiency of ternary composite for the slow photon region of 3DOM-SrTiO3(300) was well matched with the optical absorption band of photocatalyst. Further depositing Pt nanoparticles on CdS/Au/3DOM-SrTiO3(300) composite as a co-catalyst, an extraordinarily high hydrogen evolution rate (up to 5.46 mmol/g•h) and apparent quantum efficiency (42.2% at 420 nm) were achieved because of the synergistic effect of efficient carrier separation, Au SPR effect, and slow photon effect. Furthermore, these ternary CdS/Au/3DOM-SrTiO3 composite photocatalysts were very stable and could be easily recycled four times in visible light photocatalytic water splitting experiments without any loss in activity.3 Keywords Three-dimensionally ordered macroporous material; CdS/Au/3DOM-SrTiO3; Ternary composite; Hydrogen production from water splitting; Slow photon effect.4
