Novel single-balloon enteroscopy for diagnosis and treatment of the small intestine: preliminary experiences

Abstract: SBE is not only easy to perform, due to the single balloon, but it can also safely examine the deep small intestine. Therefore, SBE may be a useful diagnostic and therapeutic tool in addition to DBE for investigating suspected small bowel disease.

“…In a study of single-balloon endoscopy (SBE) in 41 individuals, of whom 17 had suspected Crohn's disease [11], 16/41 had Crohn's disease as their final diagnosis, although the results were not reported by indication. The advantages of balloon-assisted endoscopy (BAE) compared with SBCE include the evaluation of atypical lesions, the ability to obtain biopsies for histopathology, and the potential for therapeutic intervention (e. g. dilation) [48,49].…”

“…More recently, a balloon-assisted technique, which was originally introduced to investigate the small bowel, has been applied in patients with previous failed or incomplete colonoscopy. For a balloon-assisted colonoscopy, two types of balloon enteroscopes are available; the double-balloon enteroscope developed by Yamamoto et al [16], and the single-balloon enteroscope developed by Tsujikawa et al [17]. The reported success rates of single-(SBC) or doubleballoon-assisted colonoscopy (DBC) in patients with previous incomplete conventional colonoscopy range from 88 to 100 % [18][19][20][21][22][23].…”
