Novel silicone rubber and polyvinyl alcohol (pva) compound as nucleus pulposus replacement in intervertebral disc herniation surgery

Abstract: AIM:To identify a novel material with biomechanical properties identical to the nucleus pulposus in the lumbar vertebrae of goats for use in intervertebral disc herniation surgery. MATERIAL and METHODS:In this laboratory-based experimental study, the silicone rubber material test group consisted of sample compositions 35PVA65SR, 30PVA70SR, and 40PVA60SR. Axial compression mechanical tests were conducted to assess the biomechanical properties of the resulting material in terms of stress, strain, load, and displ… Show more

“…Regarding the progress of research on PVA hydrogel as an NP replacement material, Leone et al found that PVA with PVP molar ratio of 1:1 has excellent biomechanical characteristics which is a promising NP replacement material ( Leone et al, 2019 ). Permana et al reported that the biomechanical properties of PVA combined with Silicone Rubber close to human NP ( Permana et al, 2022 ).…”

“…In addition, poly (vinyl alcohol) is a biodegradable material that can be improved in its degradability through hydrolysis due to the presence of hydroxyl groups on carbon atoms [ 19 , 20 ]. PVA is widely used for hydrogel [ 21 , 22 ] and has been investigated for injectable materials in nucleus pulposus replacement therapy [ 23 ]. On the other hand, graphene is a carbon atom composed of monolayers and forms 2D structures.…”
