Novel Ti3C2Tx MXene/epoxy intumescent fire‐retardant coatings for ancient wooden architectures

Abstract: Most of the ancient buildings are made of inflammable wooden structures, which have serious potential safety hazards. Applying fire‐retardant coating is one of the simplest and most effective means of fire prevention in ancient wooden buildings. In this work, we have demonstrated that the Ti3C2Tx transition metal carbide/carbonitride (MXene) was applied as the synergetic agent, waterborne epoxy resin as the film‐forming agent, ammonium polyphosphate, dipentaerythritol, and melamine (P‐C‐N system) as the intume… Show more

“…It can be found that the (104) peak at 2 θ = 39.0° disappeared and the (002) diffraction peak shifted from 9.6° for Ti 3 AlC 2 to 7.2° for Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets, indicating the removal of the Al layer in Ti 3 AlC 2 and the exfoliation of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets. 39,40 Moreover, the Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheet dispersion shows the typical Tyndall scattering effect (Fig. S1b, ESI†), suggesting that it has good uniformity and presents colloidal features.…”

“…This phenomenon allows heat and smoke to be isolated and achieve good heat insulation and smoke suppression effect [21] . Ceria can strengthen the compactness of the formed foam structure, which prevents the release of noncombustible gas, thus promoting the fire‐retardant performance [22] . As shown in Figure 10(e), Ce4 had denser surface and smaller holes than the other coatings, but its carbon skeleton was very small and the expansion degree was very low.…”
