Novel Reactivity of Ferrocene Derivatives toward Lewis Acids:  Decomplexation with Boron Trichloride and Synthesis of a Triple-Decker-like Iron−Zinc Complex

Abstract: Ferrocene derivatives bearing the 8-quinoline-tetramethyl-Cp ligand (1) possess a free nitrogen donor function. Because of the methyl groups at the Cp ring, the quinoline adopts an orientation that locates the N-donor above the five-membered ring. Additional molecules that are bound by the N-donor function are therefore in proximity to the π-system of the Cp ring. Zinc dichloride, which binds to the N-donor, interacts slightly with the ferrocene moiety, and the triple-decker-like complex 5 is formed. The more … Show more

“…However, electrophilic borylation has been underutilised for the synthesis of fused boracycles and is limited to date to the borylative fusion of aryl substituted pyridyls. 12 Furthermore, systematic studies into the effect of varying exocyclic boron substituents on key properties ( e.g. , frontier orbital energies) in these materials are also extremely limited.…”

“…The B(1)-Cl(1) bond length of 1.921(3) Å in 2 is slightly longer than those observed in four-coordinate boron chlorides (ca. 1.86-1.89 Å ) [18,19]. This elongation may be caused by the tight coordination of the two dipyrrin nitrogen atoms to the boron center.…”

“…The interactions between the d 10 -metal ions with the carbocycles is induced by the special geometry of the quinolyl-Cp-ligands [77]. The bending of the chlorine ligands in 107 and 109, shows that the carbon atom of the Cp-ring is really a fourth ligand to the zinc ions [78].…”
