Novel polyamide based nucleic acid analogs-synthesis of oligomers and RNA-binding properties

“Wir werden es nie wissen können” ist ein Truismus, der zu Resignation gegenüber jeglicher experimenteller Investition in eine Suche nach der Chemie der Entstehung des Lebens verführt. Doch widerspricht solche Resignation radikal der Herausforderung, die der Chemie als Naturwissenschaft auferlegt ist. Ungeachtet der Prognose, wonach der kürzeste Weg zum Verständnis der Metamorphose des Chemischen ins Biologische über die experimentelle Modellierung “künstlichen chemischen Lebens” führt, wird die naturwissenschaftliche Suche nach dem von der Natur begangenen Weg der Entstehung des Lebens, das wir kennen, wohl nie wirklich enden. Denn sie ist Teil der Suche nach unserem eigenen Ursprung.

"We'll never be able to know" is a truism that leads to resignation with respect to any experimental effort to search for the chemistry of life's origin. But such resignation runs radically counter to the challenge imposed upon chemistry as a natural science. Notwithstanding the prognosis according to which the shortest path to understanding the metamorphosis of the chemical into the biological is by way of experimental modeling of "artificial chemical life", the scientific search for the route nature adopted in creating the life we know will arguably never truly end. It is, after all, part of the search for our own origin.
