Novel paper sizing agents based on renewables. Part 8: on the binding behavior of reactive sizing agents—the question of covalent versus adsorptive binding

Abstract: The binding mechanisms of two reactive sizing agents, alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA) and maleated sunflower oil high-oleic (MSOHO), with cellulose were studied. While ASA is produced from olefins out of fossil resources, MSOHO is a green sizing agent based on renewable plant materials. In contrast to common assumptions, that ASA is mostly covalently bound to cellulose, this study showed the largest part of ASA to be bound only by physisorption and only a rather small fraction, typically about 0.5 %, to be co… Show more

“…By controlling the hydrolysis degree of its methoxy groups, Tang et al achieved oleophobic paper [25] . MSOHO (maleated high oleic sunflower oil) is among the water processable paper coatings [26] . MSOHO, synthesized by ene‐reaction of maleic anhydride with sunflower oil, is a green sizing agent alternative to alkenyl succinimidyl anhydrides (ASA) and alkyl ketene (AKD).…”

“…An alternative to AKD is alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA), which may also be used as a paper sizing agent (Lackinger et al 2016). Sizing by ASA is considered superior to AKD by some, as the kinetics are faster (Lackinger et al 2016).…”

“…An alternative to AKD is alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA), which may also be used as a paper sizing agent (Lackinger et al 2016). Sizing by ASA is considered superior to AKD by some, as the kinetics are faster (Lackinger et al 2016). Though faster, ASA is seemingly a somewhat poorer hydrophobing agent (CAs < 90°) compared to AKD (CAs < 100°) when compared experimentally on silica surfaces (Lindfors et al 2007).…”

“…The U.S. production of paper food service ware, including molded pulp fiber containers, exceeds 1.4Mt (Environmental Protection Agency, 2019a), is inexpensive and renewable, but lacks the functional properties PS packaging provides and which consumers have come to expect. A number of different paper additives have been developed that markedly improve the functional properties of paper packaging (Lackinger et al., 2016). Per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are an important and broad class of chemicals that have been used for decades in many consumer and industrial products, including paper packaging.…”
