Novel observations of Thiobacterium, a sulfur-storing Gammaproteobacterium producing gelatinous mats

Abstract: The genus Thiobacterium includes uncultivated rod-shaped microbes containing several spherical grains of elemental sulfur and forming conspicuous gelatinous mats. Owing to the fragility of mats and cells, their 16S ribosomal RNA genes have not been phylogenetically classified. This study examined the occurrence of Thiobacterium mats in three different sulfidic marine habitats: a submerged whale bone, deep-water seafloor and a submarine cave. All three mats contained massive amounts of Thiobacterium cells and w… Show more

“…S2B). Bacteria closely related to the alphaproteobacterial, epsilonproteobacterial and Bacteroidetes sequences included (i) bacteria associated with other Osedax species (Goffredi et al ., 2005; 2007); (ii) free‐living bacteria found at whale‐falls (Goffredi et al ., 2005; Tringe et al ., 2005; Goffredi and Orphan, 2010); (iii) free‐living bacteria from the Tjärnö aquarium in Sweden where the whale bones were kept (Grünke et al ., 2010); and (iv) symbionts of other marine invertebrates (Fig. S2B).…”

“…Microsensors for sulfide, pH and oxygen (Revsbech and Ward, 1983;Jeroschewski et al, 1996;de Beer et al, 1997), as well as a macro temperature sensor (Pt100; UST Umweltsensortechnik GmbH, Geschwenda, Germany), were mounted on the profiler. In addition, ex situ microprofiles were measured in retrieved push cores with a laboratory setup as previously described (Grünke et al, 2010). Microsensor calibration, measurements, profile analyses and calculation of fluxes were performed as previously described by and Lichtschlag et al (2010).…”
