Novel monolithic phase shifter combining ferroelectrics and high temperature superconductors

Abstract: We describe a monolithic phase shifter which combines the low loss of high‐temperature superconductivity (HTS) with the variable dielectric properties of a ferroelectric material SrTiO3. Phase shifts greater than 28 degrees per wavelength were observed around 30° K. The compatibility of YBa2Cu3O7‐x and other ferroelectric materials is discussed. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

“…Some materials which have shown a variable permittivity with electric field are SrTiO 3 , (Ba, Sr)TiO 3 , (Pb, Sr)TiO 3 , (Pb, Ca)TiO 3 , Ba (Ti, Sn)O 3 , Ba (Ti, Zr)O 3 and KTaO 3 . Dopants are introduced into pure STO to attempt to improve the microwave properties, and there has been some success at reducing the loss tangent [8][9][10].…”

“…51 The dc electric-field tuned dielectric materials are candidates for microwave applications, including voltage-controlled oscillators, tunable filters, phase shifters, etc. [265][266][267] Usually the materials have to show a large dielectric tunabilty, =100%·[e(0)Àe(E)]/e(0), and low dielectric loss. Among the most studied compounds are presently ferroelectric (Ba, Sr)TiO 3 268 and (Pb,Sr)TiO 3 266 .…”
