Novel Molten Salts Media For Production of Functional Materials

Abstract: The potassium-cryolite-based melts were found to have an enhance protective function due to a low melting point, and an effective refining ability due to a good alumina solubility. It has been assumed that for aluminum alloys production the potassium-cryolite-based melts can be used as fluxes with improved properties as well as electrolytes for low-temperature electrolysis.

“…8 in the form of fluoride-oxide quasi-binary phase diagrams. 65,66 At the same concentration of NaF the solubility of Sc 2 O 3 is higher in melts with CR = 1.5. In this case, the liquidus temperature of the melt at the Sc 2 O 3 content of 2 mol% is higher by 25-50 degrees.…”

“…Achebo et al [ 30 ] developed a new flux based on NaCl–CaCl 2 –CaF 2 –Na 3 AlF 6 , by applying the Hadamard multivariate chemical composition model. Tkacheva et al [ 31 ] found that a potassium cryolite-based flux (the KF–AlF 3 and KF–NaF (10 wt.% AlF 3 ) molten mixtures with CR = 1.3–1.5) could play a better refining role in aluminum alloy production. Ni et al [ 32 ] designed a new JDN–Ι aluminum alloy flux, containing rare earth compounds, their experimental results indicated that it had a great effect on the secondary dendrite arm spacing (DAS) of A356 alloy.…”

“…[29][30][31][32][33][34] Nowadays, only attempts for Al-Zr master alloys producing during the electrolysis of cryolite-alumina melt (NaF-AlF 3 ) with ZrO 2 are known. 35 On the other hand, we have demonstrated the ability to synthesize of Al-Sc alloys with 2 wt% scandium by means z E-mail: suzdaltsev_av@mail.ru of electrolysis of KF-NaF-AlF 3 -Sc 2 O 3 melts in a temperature range of 750-950 • C. [36][37][38][39][40] In the present paper, the fundamental principles of the synthesis of Al-Zr alloys and master alloys during the electrolysis of KF-NaF-AlF 3 -ZrO 2 melts are investigated. As well as aluminothermic reduction of ZrO 2 , the kinetics of zirconium electroreduction from KF-NaF-AlF 3 -ZrO 2 melts was studied.…”
