Novel Modulation Method for Multidirectional Matrix Converter

Abstract: This study presents a new modulation method for multidirectional matrix converter (MDMC), based on the direct duty ratio pulse width modulation (DDPWM). In this study, a new structure of MDMC has been proposed to control the power flow direction through the stand-alone battery based system and hybrid vehicle. The modulation method acts based on the average voltage over one switching period concept. Therefore, in order to determine the duty ratio for each switch, the instantaneous input voltages are captured an… Show more

“…The second propulsion branch, known as a WPH Flywheel System, including kinetic energy storage (KES), pos.6, and a secondary electric motor/generator, pos.5, is electrically coupled via an AC/DC converter, pos.7, to the conventional driveline. The power flows, which cover the energy demands for BEV movement, are divided between the both branches with negligible losses in a power splitter, which represents a bidirectional matrix converter, formed by the DC/AC inverter, pos.2, and the AC/DC converter, pos.7 [22,23].…”

“…The operating principle of the EDDPWM has been described in [27], for MDMC with 15 bidirectional switches. Figure 1 indicates the circuit configuration of the MDMC in standalone battery based system (SABBS) when three-phase generator and two batteries are connected to the source side of the MDMC.…”

“…The EDDPWM control method can be applied to the MDMC as a modular structure for each phase where each output phase has the independent reference control signal. This reference control signal can be different in terms of frequency, waveform shape, and amplitude [27]. The MDMC works in operation modes 1, 2, and 3 when the line-to-neutral voltage of AC generator V -rms is bigger than battery voltage V -dc and works in operation modes 4 and 5 when V -dc is bigger than the line-to-neutral V -rms .…”

“…For this purpose matrix converters (MCs) are employed because they have some advantages, for example, converting AC to AC power directly without the need for electrolytic capacitors, and reversing electrical energy from loads to sources [1,2]. To use an adequate switching pattern the ordinary three phase -three phase MC can convert the mixed type of the output voltage and current, one AC and two DC, or two AC and one DC [3]. It is much convenient for the isolated power supply systems.…”
