Two amphiphilic block copolymers using hydrophobic poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) were successfully synthesized. One of them is an (A-b-B) 4 type star polymer [(PCL-b-PEG) 4 ] and the other one is a Y-shaped PEG-(PCL) 2 . A star-shaped polymer (PCL-b-PEG) 4 was prepared by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone continued by click reaction of (PCL-azide) 4 and PEG-alkyne. The synthesis of Y-shaped PEG-(PCL) 2 block copolymer was carried out via Diels-Alder click reaction of a furan protected maleimide end-functionalized PEG (PEG-MI) with an anthracene end-functionalized PCL following the ROP of ε-caprolactone. The characterization of micelles is carried out using both materials in aqueous media as drug delivery vehicles, which showed satisfying results and enhanced the cytotoxic effect of the OPEN ACCESSPolymers 2014, 6 215 anti-cancer drug vinorelbine (VLB). However, micelles consisted of Y-shaped unimers were found to be more convenient for delivery of hydrophobic drugs such as VLB because they formed in lower concentration, carrying a higher amount of drugs and owing a monomodal distribution. We concluded that the free tails of hydrophobic chains in Y-shaped block copolymer facilitate the assembly of amphiphilic material in water to form micelles.

Polyphosphazenes (PPZs) are a relatively new family of polymers based on a nitrogen–phosphorous backbone where organic side groups can be grafted. The synthetic route to PPZs is highly versatile such that it is possible to add many different functionalities that change completely the physicochemical and biological properties of the polymers. For instance, PPZs can be designed with a variety of organic side groups that render these materials biodegradable and highly biocompatible. Based on these positive features, PPZs have been explored for many biomedical applications including the design of numerous advanced drug delivery systems. In this area, PPZs have been particularly investigated as materials for the formulation of biopharmaceuticals of high added value. These include protein‐ and polynucleotide‐based medicines, applications where PPZ carriers have obtained very positive results in preclinical models. A further area of major interest for PPZs has been vaccination, where these materials have obtained excellent results in vivo as polymer adjuvants and have advanced to clinical evaluation. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The development of safe drug carriers is cardinal in cancer therapy, which can target the cancer cells and release the loaded drug on‐demand without damaging the healthy cells of the body. In our work, we synthesized three different biodegradable polymers, poly[(ethyl aminobezoate) (ethyl glycinato) phosphazenes] (PABGPs), in different mole ratio of side groups. The successful synthesis of these PABGPs was confirmed by 1H NMR, 31P NMR, FT‐IR, and gel permeation chromatography. These PABGPs were fabricated into drug (camptothecin, CPT, a hydrophobic anticancer drug) loaded nanoparticles. These drug‐loaded nanoparticles showed good drug release behaviors under normal physiological conditions (pH 7.4 and temperature 37°C). These PABGPs‐based nanoparticles may find their application as effective drug carriers for cancer therapy.
