This study aimed to develop a dental investment for titanium casting. ZrO 2 and Al 2 O 3 were selected as refractory materials to prepare three investments (Codes: A-C) according to the quantity of Zr. Al 2 O 3 cement was used as a binder at a ratio of 15%, they were mixed with special mixing liquid. B1 was used as a control mixed with water. Fundamental examinations were statistically evaluated. A casting test was performed with investment B. Fluidities, setting times, and green strengths showed no remarkable differences; however, they were significantly different from those of B1. Expansion values for A, B, C, and B1 at 850°C were 1.03%±0.08%, 1.96%±0.17%, 4.35%±0.23%, and 1.50%±0.28%, respectively. Castings were covered by only small amounts of mold materials. The hardness test showed no significant differences between castings from B and the ones from commercial investments. The experimental special mixing liquid effectively reduced the water/powder ratio and improved the strength and thermal expansion.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of a K2SO4 solution on the improvement of the properties of an experimentalmagnesia-basedgypsum-bondedinvestment.ThecharacteristicsoftheexperimentalinvestmentwithdifferentratiosofaK2SO4solutionwereasfollows:settingtime ranged from 34 to 152 minutes, green and fired compressive strengths were approximately 2.15 to 5.81 MPa and 1.63 to 2.45 MPa, respectively; thermal expansion was 0.38 to 0.47% at 700ºC, which did not show any significant differences due to the concentrationoftheK2SO4 solution. Titanium casting could be obtained using the experimental investment mixed with a 1% K2SO4 solution, and the reaction layer thickness of the casting was less than 200 μm.The results suggest that the experimental investment mixed with 1% K2SO4showedacceptablephysicalpropertiesand castingcharacteristicsfortitaniumcasting.

As-cast Ti-xGe (x = 2, 5, 10, 20 wt %) binary alloys were produced in this work, and various experiments were carried out to investigate the microstructure, mechanical properties, in vitro electrochemical and immersion corrosion behaviors as well as cytotoxicity with as-cast pure Ti as control, aiming to study the feasibility of Ti-xGe alloy system as potential dental materials. The microstructure of Ti-xGe alloys changes from single α-Ti phase to α-Ti + Ti(5)Ge(3) precipitation phase with the increase of Ge content. Mechanical tests show that Ti-5Ge alloy has the best comprehensive mechanical properties. The corrosion behavior of Ti-xGe alloys in artificial saliva with different NaF and lactic acid addition at 37°C indicates that Ti-2Ge and Ti-5Ge alloys show better corrosion resistance to fluorine-containing solution. The cytotoxicity test indicates that Ti-xGe alloy extracts show no obvious reduction of cell viability to L-929 fibroblasts and MG-63 osteosarcoma cells, similar to pure Ti which is generally acknowledged to be biocompatible. Considering all these results, Ti-2Ge and Ti-5Ge alloys possess the optimal comprehensive performance and might be used as potential dental materials.
