Novel Maleic Acid, Crosslinked, Nanofibrous Chitosan/Poly (Vinylpyrrolidone) Membranes for Reverse Osmosis Desalination

Abstract: Fresh and clean water is consistently depleting and becoming a serious problem with rapid increases in population, so seawater desalination technology has captured global attention. For an efficient desalination process, this work proposes a novel, nanofibrous, thin-film composite membrane (NF-TFC) based on the deposition of the nanofibrous active layer of a blend of chitosan (CS) and poly (vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) crosslinked with maleic acid on a 3-triethoxysilylpropylamine functionalized cellulose acetate su… Show more

“…The hydrogel composites presented improved WCA by increasing TEOS quantities, which changed the wettability of the sample from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity. At the same time, Ali et al [ 59 ] prepared a thin film based on the composites CS and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) cross-linked with maleic acid for membrane desalination application. The WCA improved with increase in maleic acid concentration from 0.5% to 2.5%.…”

“…Therefore, RO can be used to purify saltwater to produce fresh water on the low-pressure side of the membrane. RO technology has been increasing globally and has gradually replaced the conventional distillation method [ 89 , 90 , 91 ].…”

“…In this system, the permeation flux could reach 34.6 L·m −2 ·h −1 and the desalination rate was 97% [ 94 ]. Additionally, the active layer of the RO membrane could also be created by an ENM including CS and maleic acid-crosslinked PVP [ 91 ]. By combining the active layer with the 3-triethoxysilane-functionalized CA membrane substrate, another RO membrane was created.…”

“…Even though the phase inversion method of fabricating MMMs is simple, achieving the best membrane performance is often difficult. Several strategies have been adopted to enhance the performance of MMMs by annealing post-treatment, polymer composition adjustment (e.g., polymer type, polymer concentration, additive inclusion), and casting/spinning conditions (e.g., composition, temperature, humidity) [ 87 ]. After casting the MMMs, a residual solvent can be removed by drying post-treated in an oven at a specific temperature allowable by the polymer glass transition temperature.…”
