Novel Lightweight Laminate Concept with Ultrathin Chemically Strengthened Glass for Automotive Windshields

Abstract: The worldwide trend towards tightening emission legislation and improved fuel consumption continues to drive innovation in the space of automotive vehicle design. Additionally, consumers' demand for higher vehicle performance and better drive dynamics is increasing.OEMs are pursuing various technical paths in parallel to meet these targets. As such, lightweight design is becoming increasingly important, and automotive glazing is an attractive option for vehicle weight reduction. Removing mass above the vehicle… Show more

“…Thermal strengthening is dominating but is less suitable for thin glass (i.e., below 2 mm) whereas chemical strengthening (hereinafter called CS) has reached wide market success, especially for electronic handheld devices [5], pharmaceutical autoinjectors [8], aircraft windshields [8] and high-speed trains [9]. However, CS has also found applications in other market segments, e.g., photovoltaics [10][11][12], automotive [13], wine glasses (e.g., the Stem Zero collection from Nude Glass), architectural applications [14] and flexible photonics [15].…”

“…15,16 It possesses high potential for applications such as electronics, vehicles, lighting, and so on. [17][18][19] Their application of ultrathin glass is still in the category for manufacturing electronic devices and products. Recently, we developed a freestanding ultrathin glass film (UGF), which has the thickness of a few micrometers and can be directly bonded onto a substrate at room temperature.…”

“…Freestanding ultrathin glasses with the thickness of micrometers have been paid much attention in recent years due to their outstanding characteristics in terms of flexibility, transparency, surface smoothness, gas barrier capability, and so on 15,16 . It possesses high potential for applications such as electronics, vehicles, lighting, and so on 17‐19 . Their application of ultrathin glass is still in the category for manufacturing electronic devices and products.…”
