Novel Insights on the Regulation of B Cell Functionality by Members of the Tumor Necrosis Factor Superfamily in Jawed Fish

Abstract: Most ligands and receptors from the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) superfamily play very important roles in the immune system. In particular, many of these molecules are essential in the regulation of B cell biology and B cell-mediated immune responses. Hence, in mammals, it is known that many TNF family members play a key role on B cell development, maturation, homeostasis, activation, and differentiation, also influencing the ability of B cells to present antigens or act as regulators of immune responses. Evolu… Show more

“…The univariate testing of single factors found only a significant association of EBV + patients with higher levels of BAFF. BAFF is known as a key regulator of B cell homeostasis [31][32][33] , and its effects on expansion of EBV-infected B cell could be confirmed in our in vitro experiment. Importantly, no upregulation of the markers for PTLD development including IL-6, IL-10 and TNFα was observed [15][16][17][18] .…”

“…The role of various genes in insulin resistance has been investigated among which TNF-α is prominent. Recent reports suggest that TNF-α disrupts insulin signaling pathway through the reduced kinase activity of insulin receptor [28] . The highest expression rate of IL-1β gene was observed in the control and glucose-containing control groups, and there was a significant difference with the other groups (p < 0.05).…”

“…It has been extensively described that members of the TNF superfamily of ligands (TNFSF) and receptors (TNFRSF) play key roles on the homeostasis and activation of B cells both in mammals (46) and fish (47). Among TNFSF, the transcription levels of tnfsf12 (TWEAK) and tnfsf13b (BAFF) were significantly downregulated upon TNP-LPS stimulation but not in response to TNP-KLH ( Figure 5).…”
