Novel Insights on Plant Extracts to Prevent and Treat Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections

Abstract: Urinary tract infections (UTI) represent one of the most widespread infections, and frequent recurrent episodes, induced mostly by uropathogenic Escherichia coli, make them increasingly difficult to treat. Long-term antibiotic therapy is an effective approach to treat recurrent UTI but generates adverse effects, including the emergence of pathogenic strains resistant to the vast majority of antibiotics. These drawbacks have enhanced the interest toward new alternatives based on natural remedies to prevent and … Show more

“…In this present master project shows that the isolation of UTI pathogen E. coli from COVID carrying pregnancy women in and around Government and Private Clinics of Namakkal City, Tamilnadu India. This research is correlated with the research of Adriana Mirela Tache22 also isolated the Escherichia coli from patients with UTI in and around Saint George Hospital located in Beirut. This study the identification of E. coli was done by biochemical characterization which includes IMViC, Motility, Staining techniques, Microscopic observation, Sugar Fermentation Test, Catalase Test, Oxidase Test, Nitrate Reduction Test, Starch Hydrolysis Test, Triple sugar Iron Test and Urease test.…”

“…There are many plant extracts and natural products used worldwide in traditional medicine to prevent and treat UTIs. Natural products have many advantages when used as therapeutic alternatives to antibiotics owing to their high safety, efficacy, and affordability (Elekhnawy et al, 2021 ; Tache et al, 2022 ). Recently, different nanotechnological strategies could be employed to increase the bioavailability of herbal medicines, hence enhancing their biological activities (Aslam et al, 2019 ).…”

“…Coriandrum sativum EO was also able to inhibit the growth and produce bacterial structural modifications of multidrug-resistant UPEC strains [ 59 ]. Furthermore, promising medicinal plants such as Pomegranate granatum or Aronia melanocarpa showed antibacterial activities against antibiotic-resistant E. coli strains [ 60 ].…”
