Novel Hybrid Spectrum Handoff for Cognitive Radio Networks

Abstract: Abstrac tCognitive radio (CR) is pro jected as a technology (or solution) that will raise the spectrum utilizat ion considerably by allowing low-priority or secondary user (SU) to utilize the spectrum of high-priority or primary user (PU) opportunistically. Spectru m handoff is a different type of handoff necessitated by the reappearance of the primary user on the frequency channels occupied by the secondary user at that time and location. In this paper, a hybrid type of spectrum handoff algorith m is proposed… Show more

“…Despite being an interesting hybrid algorithm, the proposed simulations are vague and presented results have not been justified properly. Another hybrid scheme is presented in [75] exploiting the benefits of both proactive and reactive decisions, however, this approach suffers with the traditional drawback of large number of handoffs at PU arrival.…”

“…The most common causes of SHO are the SU’s mobility, a lack of accessible spectrum, and the identification of a PU on the channel utilized by the SU. The handoff process is cyclic; the phases are evaluation and link maintenance [ 4 ]. There are four types handoff strategies: (i) handoff triggering-timing-based [ 5 ], (ii) mobility-based spectrum aware [ 5 ], (iii) probability-based [ 6 ], and (iv) spectrum sensing-based [ 7 ].…”
