Novel Functionalised Ethylene Acrylate Copolymers as Polymer Modifiers

Abstract: A novel reactive functionalised polymer modifier system based on ethylene acrylate copolymers produced by a tubular reactor polymerisation process is discussed. The tubular copolymers are unique due to the heterogeneous distribution of acrylate comonomer in the polymer chain making them more compatible with a variety of polymer systems. Because of this feature they can be used as modifiers and universal masterbatch carrier resins for a variety of polymer systems in a more appropriate way than their autoclave b… Show more

“…Also, polymers with desired functions can be easily prepared by using monomers with appropriate functional groups. [1][2][3] Copolymerization offers flexibility with respect to possible monomers and a great diversity of polymeric products, and composition drift, which may need to be minimized or exploited in a controlled way, for specific structure-property relationships. The reactivity ratio is a measure of the tendency for a comonomer to show a preference for insertion into a growing chain in which the last inserted unit was the same, rather than the other comonomer.…”

“…The EBA copolymer used in this study, on the other hand, is produced by a free radical polymerization process in a tubular reactor, which produces a more heterogeneous molecular architecture in acrylate comonomer distribution than the common autoclave process and provides a high molecular weight at relatively high comonomer level. 23,24 Even at a higher comonomer content, there are longer ethylene repeat units from the tubular reactor than would be provided by the autoclave process. 25 Thus, its high viscosity and melt strength are helpful in production stages, whether EBA acts as a modifier or the matrix resin.…”
