Novel Fluorescent Molecular Clips: Selective Recognition Towards Fe3+ in Aqueous Solution

Abstract: In this paper, we report the synthesis, characterization and Fe(3+)-sensing properties of a series of new artificial fluorescent molecular clips, and structure of clip 1 is confirmed by X-ray crystallography. All these molecular clips had the ability to bind and sense Fe(3+) selectively through decrease fluorescence responses in THF-MeOH-Water. Fluorimetric titration experiment indicated that the quenching of these compounds' fluorescence upon Fe(3+) probably arises from the electron/energy transfer between Fe… Show more

“…The determination of metal ions has received tremendous attention in the last two decades because of its importance in the environment, biology and chemistry . Among the biologically important transition metal ions, iron plays a crucial role in many biological and environmental processes, for example, in cellular metabolism, in many enzymatic reactions as a cofactor, and in oxygen carrying by heme .…”

“…Since Fe 3+ is mostly occurred in aqueous media, it is of great importance that the sensor be able of on-line detection of this ion directly in water. To days, most of the reported Fe 3+ -fluorescent sensors required organic solvents for optimal performance, for example DMF [15,16], methanol [17,18], acetonitrile [19,20], and THF [21], which limited their direct applicability in pure water, Thus, there is still room for the development of new class of fluorescent sensors for Fe 3+ to overcome this shortage.…”
