Novel Flavonol Glycosides from the Aerial Parts of Lentil (Lens culinaris)

Abstract: While the phytochemical composition of lentil (Lens culinaris) seeds is well described in scientific literature, there is very little available data about secondary metabolites from lentil leaves and stems. Our research reveals that the aerial parts of lentil are a rich source of flavonoids. Six kaempferol and twelve quercetin glycosides were isolated, their structures were elucidated using NMR spectroscopy and chemical methods. This group includes 16 compounds which have not been previously described in the s… Show more

“…UHPLC/MS analysis of 80% MeOH crude extract of lentil roots showed the presence of a variety of putative phenolic compounds and several saponins. It seems that the roots are practically devoid of quercetin and kaempferol acylated glycosides, which are present in significant amounts in leaves and stems of this plant [11]. Instead, derivatives of phenolic acids, dihydrochalcones, and numerous undefined compounds were detected.…”

“…UHPLC/MS analyses of the root extract and its fractions were carried out using an ACQUITY UPLC System chromatograph ( Waters , Milford, MA, USA), equipped with a PDA detector and coupled with a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer ( ACQUITY TQD , Waters ). Samples were chromatographed on an ACQUITY BEH C18 (100 × 2.1 mm, 1.7 μm; Waters ) column; details of the separation conditions and the MS settings were described previously . Exact mass measurements were performed using a SYNAPT G2‐S HDMS system ( Waters , Milford, MA, USA).…”

“…In a study conducted by Zuchowski et al . (), acylated and non‐acylated glycosides of kaempferol and quercetin in lentil seeds were identified using NMR spectroscopy. Similarly, kaempferol, quercetin and catechin glycosides were detected in lentil sprouts by Troszyńska et al .…”

“…The profile of individual phenolic compounds (glycoside derivatives of quercetin, kaempferol and catechin) in the control and probioticenriched lentil sprouts is in line with that previously reported for sprouts of these legumes. In a study conducted by Zuchowski et al (2014), acylated and nonacylated glycosides of kaempferol and quercetin in lentil seeds were identified using NMR spectroscopy. Similarly, kaempferol, quercetin and catechin glycosides were detected in lentil sprouts by Troszy nska et al Means (AE SD) in columns followed by different letters are significantly different (n = 9; P ≤ 0.05).…”
