Recently, considerable attention has focused on enhancing the security and safety of industries with high-risk level activities in order to protect the equipment and environment. In particular, chemical processes and nuclear power generation may have a deep impact on their surroundings. In the case of major events, such as chemical spills, oil rig explosions, or nuclear accidents, collecting accurate and rapidlyevolving data becomes a challenging task. So, coordinating a fleet of autonomous mobile robots is a very promising way to deal with unpredicted events and also prevent malicious actions. This paper addresses the problem of assigning optimally a set of tasks to a set of mobile robots equipped with different sensors to minimize a global objective function. The robots perform sensing tasks in order to monitor the area and to facilitate firefighters and inspectors work if a disaster occurs by providing the necessary measures. For this purpose, a centralized Genetic Algorithm (GA) is proposed to determine the task each robot will perform and the order of execution. The proposed approach is tested through a simulation scenario of a grid map environment that represents an industrial area of the city of Le Havre, France. Moreover, a comparative study is conducted with the Hybrid Filtered Beam Search (HFBS) approach and the Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) solver Cplex. The results demonstrate that the GA approach offers a favorable balance between optimality and execution time.

The adoption of emergency alerting systems can bring countless benefits when managing urban areas, industrial plants, farms, roads and virtually any area that is subject to the occurrence of critical events, supporting in rescue operations and reducing their negative impacts. For such systems, a promising approach is to exploit scalar sensors to detect events of interest, allowing for the distributed monitoring of different variables. However, the use of cameras as visual sensors can enhance the detection of critical events, which can be employed along with scalar sensors for a more comprehensive perception of the environment. Although the particularities of visual sensing may be challenging in some scenarios, the combination of scalar and visual sensors for the early detection of emergency situations can be valuable for many scenarios, such as smart cities and industry 4.0, bringing promising results. Therefore, in this article, we extend a sensors-based emergency detection and alerting system to also exploit visual monitoring when identifying critical events. Implementation and experimental details are provided to reinforce the use of cameras as a relevant sensor unit, bringing promising results for emergencies management.

This paper introduces a taxonomy of vision systems for ground mobile robots. In the last five years, a significant number of relevant papers have contributed to this subject. Firstly, a thorough review of the papers is proposed to discuss and classify both past and the most current approaches in the field. As a result, a global picture of the state of the art of the last five years is obtained. Moreover, the study of the articles is used to put forward a comprehensive taxonomy based on the most up-to-date research in ground mobile robotics. In this sense, the paper aims at being especially helpful to both budding and experienced researchers in the areas of vision systems and mobile ground robots. The taxonomy described is devised from a novel perspective, namely in order to respond to the main questions posed when designing robotic vision systems: why?, what for?, what with?, how?, and where? The answers are derived from the most relevant techniques described in the recent literature, leading in a natural way to a series of classifications that are discussed and contextualized. The article offers a global picture of the state of the art in the area and discovers some promising research lines.
