Novel fibers fabricated directly from chitin solution and their application as wound dressing

Abstract: For the first time, pure chitin fibers with relatively high strength, lustrous surface and circular cross section were spun directly from chitin solution dissolved in an NaOH-urea aqueous system with freezing. Subsequently, chitin nonwoven fabrics were constructed from the fresh wet fibers by hot pressing, and tested as wound dressings, showing excellent ability to accelerate healing, owing to the retainment of the intrinsic a-chitin structure.

“…Notwithstanding the fact that the described self-assembly has proven to be viable, it would be better to use solvents exempt from toxicity and volatility. One approach is based on ionic liquids considered as green solvents capable to replace organic compounds [ 82 ], whilst the second approach is based on urea in alkaline solution [ 83 , 84 , 85 , 86 ]. In addition, self-assembled chitin nanofibers are important for the study of randomly oriented nanofiber networks.…”

“…In contrast, Huang et al. synthesized chitin fibers and nonwoven fabric using NaOH/urea as the solvent . The chitin nonwoven fabric exhibited a more remarkable effect on wound healing than the traditional gauze.…”

“…The porous nature of nanofibrous scaffolds enable excellent ability to absorb wound exudates, prevent the moisture loss around the wound, allow oxygen permeation, protect the wound from bacterial infection, and exhibit good conformability [562,563]. A diverse range of synthetic and natural polymers, including polyurethane (PU), PLA, PCL, PLGA, polyvinyl alcohol, dextran, chitin, chitosan, cellulose acetate, gelatin and collagen, have been exploited as candidates for dressing materials, where bioactive agents such as anti-inflammatory drugs and tissue growth agents were also incorporated in the polymeric nanofibers for controlled delivery [562,[564][565][566][567]].…”
