Novel DTN Mobility-Driven Routing in Autonomous Drone Logistics Networks

Abstract: Drones have become prevalent for the delivery of goods by many retail companies such as Amazon and Dominos. Amazon has an issued patent that describes how drones scan and collect data on their fly-overs while dropping off packages. In this context, we propose a path optimization algorithm for a drone multi-hop communications network that can carry and forward data in addition to its primary function of parcel deliveries. We argue that traditional Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) based protocols may not be effic… Show more

“…Therefore, it is important to study the effect of cost minimisation resultant from TC on the routing performance to consider more optimum routing. In References [81,82], heuristic-based DTN algorithms were proposed for drones flight path optimization. These algorithms optimse the route for both consignment and data delivery with higher delivery efficiency compared with other DTN algorithms such as EBR and Epidemic.…”

“…where e loaded represents the power with the package present and without the package is indicated by e unloaded . In other words, the total energy consumption of the outbound trip and the return trip is calculated (our recent work discusses more in details [15]). From Equations (1) and (2), we derive the total energy consumption as follows: , that is determined based on energy.…”

“…If the parcel's deadline is estimated to expire before reaching the parcel's destination, the drone simply ignores adding more waypoints in their route before visiting the parcel's destination. This paper is an extension of our other work in [15] which does not consider wireless charging stations.…”

“…To maintain secure and reliable flight operation, UAVs can exchange safetycritical information with remote pilots, closest aerial vehicles, and air traffic controllers with an assistance of control and non-payload communication (CNPC). UAVs are also delivering goods and improving the throughput of 5G networks [1][2][3].…”
