Three novel organic dyes coded as FHD4‐1, FHD4‐2, and FHD4‐3 featuring spiro[dibenzo[3,4:6,7]cyclohepta[1,2‐b]quinoxaline‐10,9′‐fluorene] (SDBQX) moieties are designed to inhibit dye aggregation to improve the performance of dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The consistent absorption onsets of FHD4‐1, FHD4‐2, and FHD4‐3 in solutions and adsorbed on TiO2 films indicate that these dyes are aggregation‐free dyes. Therefore, coadsorption with chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) of these three dyes reduces the performance of DSSCs because no inhibition effect for dye aggregation is needed, but, on the contrary, the dye loading amount is reduced after addition of CDCA.

In this study, nonperipherally tetra-substituted (2), peripherally tetrasubstituted (3), and peripherally octa-substituted (4) zinc(II) phthalocyanines were synthesized as sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) in which 3-pyridin-3-ylpropoxy substituent acts as anchoring unit to bind TiO 2 surface. The optical results indicated that there is an interaction between the dyes and the TiO 2 surface. The photovoltaic performances of the DSSCs based on these dyes were found to depend on both the position and number of the substituents. Despite the more red-shifted absorption, the DSSC based on 2 showed the conversion efficiency of 0.68%, which is lower than 1.36% and 0.92% for 3 and 4, respectively, under one sun (AM 1.5G). The vertical orientation of the dye on TiO 2 surface could be the main reason for the higher photovoltaic performance of complex 3, which is beneficial for not only injecting the electrons into the conduction band of TiO 2 but also reducing the charge recombination. Overall, these results demonstrate that the peripherally tetra-substituted 3-pyridin-3-ylpropoxy zinc(II) phthalocyanine complex (3) as a sensitizer can more efficiently utilize the photons in the red/near-infrared region with respect to the other complexes studied.

Two new metal-free organic dyes in D-π-A structure, containing a quinoline π-bridge and malononitrile (4a) and cyanoacrylic acid (4b) as acceptors, were synthesized for the first time to apply dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). The structures of these compounds were elucidated by FT-IR, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR techniques. The photophysical and photovoltaic properties of the obtained compounds were investigated and compared by current density-voltage (J-V) graphs. Compound 4b containing cyanoacrylic acid as an acceptor reached an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.645 V, short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 6.66 mA cm -2 and fill factor (FF) of 0.70 in the presence of chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), showing a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.01%. It is also observed that the incorporation of thiomethyl group to the structure instead of methoxy group increases the PCE.
