Novel Co3O4 Nanoparticles/Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Composites with Extraordinary Catalytic Activity for Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER)

Abstract: Herein, Co3O4 nanoparticles/nitrogen-doped carbon (Co3O4/NPC) composites with different structures were prepared via a facile method. Structure control was achieved by the rational morphology design of ZIF-67 precursors, which were then pyrolyzed in air to obtain Co3O4/NPC composites. When applied as catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the M-Co3O4/NPC composites derived from the flower-like ZIF-67 showed superior catalytic activities than those derived from the rhombic dodecahedron and hollow sp… Show more

“…Platinum (Pt)/Pt-based alloys and iridium/ruthenium oxides (IrO 2 /RuO 2 ) are regarded as the most efficient electrocatalysts for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively [6][7][8][9][10]. However, their high cost and compromised stability as well as the low earth abundance of these metals impede their widespread application [11][12][13][14][15]. Therefore, it is highly desirable to fabricate alternative noble-metal-free and durable electrocatalysts for both OER and HER systems.…”

“…4 a), all diffraction peak intensities and positions of Zn@NC matched with those of metallic Zn (PDF#04-0831). This identification suggested that the organic compositions of ZIF-8 were converted to pyrolytically amorphous carbon composite while the zinc ions in ZIF-8 were reduced by pyrolytic carbon to metallic zinc [ 57 ]. From the SEM image (Fig.…”

“…The potential versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) can be obtained from the potential, measured against a SCE electrode, according to E vs.RHE = E vs.SCE + E θ SCE + 0.059pH. Overpotential (η) for the OER was η = E vs.RHE − 1.23 V = E vs.SCE − 0.207 V [33]. NSHDs were produced by calcinating the Co-LDH HDs fabricated by adding extra cobalt nitrate.…”
