Novel chitosan–cellulose nanofiber self-healing hydrogels to correlate self-healing properties of hydrogels with neural regeneration effects

Abstract: Biodegradable self-healing hydrogels are attractive materials for tissue repair; however, the impact of the self-healing abilities of hydrogels on tissue repair is not clear. In this study, we prepared novel chitosan-cellulose nanofiber (CS-CNF) composite self-healing hydrogels with the same modulus (approximately 2 kPa) but tunable self-healing properties. By adding a low amount of CNFs (0.06-0.15 wt%) in the pristine chitosan (CS) self-healing hydrogel, the reversible dynamic Schiff bonding, strain sensitivi… Show more

“…As shown in Scheme 1a, TOCNs were prepared according to the literature [4,49,50]. Paper pulp (15 g) was dispersed in 1000 mL of DI water with vigorous stirring for a few hours and then the filtrate was collected and washed with water to remove impurities.…”

“…Self-healing of organisms is a common phenomenon in nature. When injured by the outside world, life forms can heal themselves, which provides inspiration for self-healing materials [1][2][3][4] Therefore, the self-healing mechanism is widely used in a variety of materials, because it can increase the service life of materials and reduce the demand for resources. [5][6][7][8] As the surface protection of metal matrix and foundation building, coating is easy to be scratched and damaged by external materials, and the matrix may also be damaged.…”

“…Recently, Cheng et al exploited chitosan-cellulose nanofiber selfhealing hydrogels for neural regeneration. Improved neural differentiation and oxygen metabolism were observed upon embedding neural stem cells (Cheng et al, 2019). In other study by Li et al (2018) polyacrylamide grafted cellulose nanocrystals (CNC-g-PAM), as physical crosslinkers and interfacial compatible nanofillers, were incorporated into poly(acrylic acid) to develop NC hydrogels.…”
