Novel ceramides from aerial parts of Saussurea involucrata Kar. et. Kir.

Abstract: Novel ceramides, together with nine known compounds were isolated from aerial parts of the Saussurea involucrata Kar. et. Kir. The novel structures were determined by spectroscopic methods and microscale chemical degradation. The ceramides showed appreciable cytotoxicity against three human tumor cell lines including human promyelocytic leukemia (HL-60), human melanoma (A375-S2) and human cervical carcinoma (HeLa) cell lines. The results suggested that this class of ceramides may have potential as an antitumor… Show more

“…Experiments have verified the anti-cancer bioactivity of S. involucrata through different mechanism of action, including its interference on the cell growth process (Byambaragchaa et al, 2013), mainly by causing cell apoptosis Way et al, 2010) and cytotoxicity (Wu et al, 2009;Xiao et al, 2011b;Zhang et al, 2011b); affecting cell adhesion, migration and aggregation; while in gene level, it also has certain impact on transcription activity (Byambaragchaa et al, 2013). Human cancer cell lines were mainly targets in the anticancer bioactivities assessments and different assays were used to monitor the level of certain protein expression in the tumor cells (Byambaragchaa et al, 2013;Chen et al, 2012;Way et al, 2010;Wu et al, 2009;Zhang et al, 2011b) while in vivo experiments involved the xenograft model Way et al, 2010). The principal active compound has not yet been confirmed so far but experiments have suggested high possibility for it to be lying within the ethanol extract (75-95%) or the ethyl acetate fraction.…”

“…For example, Artemisia annua and its derivatives are effective in treating malaria [1]. Saussurea involucrate , an endangered species, possesses anti-fatigue, anti-inflammation, anti-tumor and free radical scavenging properties [2]. Echinacea also has immuno-modulatory properties with its ability to reduce inflammation, speed up wound healing and boost the immune system in response to bacterial or viral infection [3].…”

“…ex Maxim is a valuable traditional Chinese medicinal herb of the family Asteraceae. The plant has long been used under the herbal name ''Tianshan snow lotus'' for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, cough with cold, stomachache, dysmenorrhea, and altitude sickness (Encyclopaedia of Traditional Chinese Medicine 1995) and has recently been found to have antiinflammatory (He et al 1990;Jia et al 2005;Chen et al 2010), antifatigue (Zheng et al 1993), antitumor (Wu et al 2009), and anticancer actions (Liu et al 1985;Han 1995;Way et al 2010). S. involucrata is a perennial herbaceous plant, a special local plant growing only in the rocky mountains and glaciers near or above the snowline about 4,000 m above sea level in Xinjiang, Tibet, and Yunnan Provinces of China, having the ability to resist harsh climates with severe cold, intense ultraviolet radiation, and low oxygen.…”
