Novel Auditory Displays in Highly Automated Vehicles: Sonification Improves Driver Situation Awareness, Perceived Workload, and Overall Experience

Abstract: Highly automated driving systems are expected to require the design of new user-vehicle interactions. Sonification can be used to provide contextualized alarms and cues that can increase situation awareness and user experience. In this study, we examined user perceptions of potential use cases for level 4 automated vehicles in online focus group interviews (N=12). Also, in a driving simulator study, we evaluated (1) visual-only display; (2) non-speech with visual display; and (3) speech with visual display wit… Show more

“…As stated above, sonification is intrinsically interdisciplinary. But some studies focus on either side, like the viewpoint of audio engineering [11], human factors [55,56], psychoacoustics [28,29], design [27], or arts [23,24,33]. Readers of such studies can expect to find the terminology from the respective discipline and results that are relevant to the specific discipline.…”

“…In recent years, a number of novel HMI concepts have been proposed to both keep the driver in the loop and support drivers' re-entry into the loop after automated driving. These include tactile [11], visual [12], auditory (including speech-and non-speech-based [13]), and even olfactory cues [14]. Given drivers' likely high engagement in visual NDRTs in the future, the use of ambient Light-Emitting Displays (LEDs) has been explored as a means to provide peripheral light-based cues to drivers about an AV's current state, along with requests for a driver's attention or action.…”
