Novel associative nanoparticles grafted with hydrophobically modified zwitterionic polymer brushes for the rheological control of aqueous polymer gel fluids

Abstract: Novel associative nanoparticles (ANPs) are synthesized by grafting poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine-co-stearyl methacrylate) polymer brushes on silica nanoparticles by using surface-mediated living radical polymerization.

“…The synthetic procedure begins with grafting hydrophobically modified hygroscopic zwitterionic polymer brushes onto 20 nm sized silica NPs by surface-mediated living radical polymerization 22 (Figure 2A). The copolymerization of SMA and MPC on trichloroacetyl-tagged silica NPs in the presence of catalytic Mo(CO) 6 successfully grafted the poly(SMA-co-MPC) brushes.…”

“…The highest viscosity enhancement was reproducibly obtained at pH 4−5. This is attributed to the fact that the chain extension of the grafted poly(MPC-co-SMA) brushes on the ANPs is more favorable under mildly acidic conditions, 22 which gives them more chances to hydrophobically interact with APRMs. All of these results support the interpretation that the Pickering emulsions formed with interfaces that were made up of ANPs and APRMs could have such excellent emulsion stability against harsh environmental factors because of the formation of the complex ANPs/ APRM thin film at the interface.…”

“…Because the flow behavior is one of the important properties of gel emulsions for practical applications, it is necessary to measure the rheological properties of gel emulsions before polymerization. 67,68 Specifically, in order to research the effect of water content on the mechanical properties of the gel emulsions, the storage modulus G′ of gel emulsions was measured as a function of shear stress. As shown in Fig.…”

“…The viscosity of associative polymers is predominantly a function of the hydrophobic interaction network that exists between polymer chains (Yang et al, 2016). The identification of a parameter that uniquely describes these hydrophobic interactions between associative polymers is crucial in the understanding of its sustainability, optimization and control when transported in a reservoir.…”
