Novel Aspects of the Reaction of 3‐(Benzimidazol‐2‐yl)‐2‐imino‐coumarins with Aromatic Aldehydes.

Fused pyrimidine derivatives R 0515Novel Aspects of the Reaction of 3-(Benzimidazol-2-yl)-2-imino-coumarins with Aromatic Aldehydes. -Reaction of the title benzimidazolyl-2-iminocoumarins with aromatic aldehydes provides the corresponding pentacyclic heterocycles [cf. (III), (VII)] or the 2-iminocoumarin hydrolysis products (V) depending on the substitution pattern of both the starting imine and aldehyde compounds. Imines (IV) form condensation products (VII) only in reactions with aromatic aldehydes bearing donor substituents.
