Novel approaches to glioma drug design and drug screening

Abstract: The development of novel and highly potent chemotherapeutic agents for both glioma and glioma stem cells (GSCs) is highly important for future brain cancer research. Thus, research efforts should be directed towards developing innovative molecularly targeted antiglioma agents in order to reduce the toxicity and drug resistance which are associated with current forms of therapy. Development of novel pre-clinical drug screening procedures is also very critical for the overall success of brain cancer therapies in… Show more

“…1 Temozolomide (TMZ), the most commonly used chemotherapy for glioma, and other current anti-glioma drugs are associated with strong side effects, poor drug delivery, and persistent chemoresistance. 2 There is therefore a need to develop novel anti-glioma agents for the treatment of malignant glioma. Natural products are highly significant sources of novel drug leads, especially the anticancer drugs.…”

“…Chemotherapy is an important adjunctive therapy for treating gliomas and temozolomide (TMZ) is the only drug that has been independently used for the treatment of gliomas. The efficacy of the currently used anticancer drugs including TMZ is limited (Chamberlain 2010;Patil et al 2013). There is therefore a need to discover lead compounds for the development of novel anti-glioma drugs.…”

“…1 While chemotherapy has played an important role in treating gliomas, temozolomide (TMZ) is the only drug that has been alone used for the treatment of gliomas, and the efficacy of TMZ, as well as other current drugs remains limited. 1,2 There is a need to discover lead compounds for the development of novel anti-glioma drugs. Natural products are significant sources of new drug leads.…”
