Novel Approach to Tooth Chemistry: Quantification of Human Enamel Apatite in Context for New Biomaterials and Nanomaterials Development

Abstract: A series of linear profiles of the elements of the enamel in human molar teeth were made with the use of an electron microprobe and a Raman microscope. It is postulated that the enamel can be treated as the superposition of variable “overbuilt” enamel on the stable “core” enamel at the macro-, micro- and nanoscale level. The excessive values characterize the “overbuilt enamel”. All the profiles of excessive parameters along the enamel thickness from the enamel surface to the dentin enamel junction (DEJ) can be… Show more

“…Meanwhile, the concentration of Cl is inversely correlated with Mg. This provides a striking confirmation of our previous studies, as presented in [26,38], where it was shown that the apatite matter in enamel and its variability are strongly stoichiometric. Now, this finding has widened to encompass water and organic matter.…”

“…All the mentioned relationships have positive correlations, which is very important from the point of view of Mg's role in the formation of enamel. Moreover, changes in Mg contents correspond to the well-correlated changes in Cl concentrations, which were previously and independently indicated in our earlier papers [26,38] and was found to have important implications for the ordered ion exchanges in enamel (see Figures 3 and 4). There exists a strong linear and positive correlation between the growth in conten of organic ma er and magnesium (see simple graph in Figure 2 showing the direction chemical variability).…”

“…2. The fact that the structural characteristics of the specimens remained unchanged without the evidence of producing FA/FHA suggests that the newly formed structure inside the lesion was mainly composed of HA incorporated with substituent ions from labile minerals at the mineralizing zone—for example, Mg 2+ /Na + for Ca 2+ , F − /CO 3 2− for OH − /HPO 4 2− , and CO 3 2− for PO 4 3− (substitution B) with Na + for the rearrangement of electrical charges (Hughes 1996; Kuczumow et al 2020). The undisturbed quality of crystals detected after AIP treatment is probably due to the high carbonate content in their structure (Sa et al 2014; Abou Neel et al 2016), as it is well documented that biological apatite like dental enamel could be modified by other constituents without affecting their basic phases (Antonakos et al 2007; Buchalla 2013).…”
