Phase transition temperatures of ferroelectric liquid crystals ((S)-(-)-2-methylbutyl 4 -(4 -n-alkanoyloxybenzoyloxy) biphenyl-4-carboxylates (where n = 16 and 18)) are studied through two techniques of image analysis. One is a statistical method, applied to compute the statistical parameters from the textures of each sample and the other, computation of Legendre moments being applied as image moment analysis, both of which are considered as a function of temperature. The textures of the samples are recorded with the polarizing optical microscope (POM) attached to the hot stage and high resolution camera. The phase transition temperatures of samples are inferred by the abrupt changes in the computed parameter values. The results obtained from the present methodology are in good agreement with those published in earlier literature done by the different techniques, like differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

Phase transition temperatures of p,n-alkyloxy benzoic acids (nOBA, n = 3 to 10 and 12) are investigated basing on the textural image analysis of liquid crystal. The analysis is carried out by the computation of Legendre moments. Textures of the homeotropically aligned compounds are recorded as a function of temperature using POM in arthroscopic mode attached to the hot stage and high resolution camera. A recurrence formula is used to compute the liquid crystal textures based on Legendre polynomial. The discontinuities and fluctuations in the values of Legendre moments as a function of temperature are related to the phase transition temperatures of the sample. This method is successful in conforming or detecting the phase transition temperatures and the present findings are comparable with literature.

Phase transition temperatures of azomethine esters: 3-hydroxy-4-{[(4-iodophenyl)imino]methyl}phenyl alkanoates (C n-1 H 2n-1 COO-, n = 8, 18) are identified using Legendre moments or Legendre moment coefficients. As a function of temperature, Liquid crystal textures are recorded from the arthroscopic mode of Polarizing Optical Microscope having the attachment of hot stage and camera. In this paper, Legendre moments are computed from the brightness information of liquid crystal textures using MATLAB software. The changes in the textural features with respect to temperature bring the variations in the brightness values, are useful to identify the phase transitions. The abrupt changes in the Legendre moment curve gives information to understand the transition temperatures of liquid crystals. The obtained results are in good agreement with literature.
