Novel application for electrochemotherapy: Immersion of nasal cavity in dog

Abstract: Electrochemotherapy is a new modality of local cancer treatment that increases the delivery of chemotherapy drugs into tumor cells by applying intense electric fields. This novel electrochemotherapy application was applied as an adjuvant to surgery and eliminated intranasal tumors in dog. The treatment challenges are the surgery limitations due to anatomy and residual tumor in the bone cavity. Most of the tumoral mass on nasal cavity was surgically removed. The internal nasal cavity was immersed in liquid and … Show more

“…This procedure is very complex and prone to fail because the misplacement of the needles leaves areas of the tumor untreated. In some cases, open surgery is needed for placing the needles correctly 16 , such as in the case reported by Suzuki et al 17 , where the results were very good though the procedure required open surgery and the filling of the nasal cavity with gel to improve conductivity. These was not needed in our case since the electrode is inserted through the nasal orifice and, secretions and blood present in the nasal duct replaced conductive gel.…”

“…In particular, the group of Dr. Marshall made several publications on this topic [ 10 , 70 , 97 , 102 , 103 , 104 , 105 , 106 , 107 , 108 ]. The use of ECT in veterinary medicine began in 2008 in Brazil by the group of Dr. Rangel [ 109 , 110 , 111 , 112 , 113 , 114 ], closely followed by the group of Dr. Marshall, from Argentina, in 2009. Although the treatment had been used in human medicine in Europe since 2006, there were no devices available in Latin America for human nor veterinary medicine at that time.…”
